The Figure Skating Friending Meme

There's already a few people on my flist who are FS fans, but I'd love to find more. If you dears would kindly fill this out and spread it around, I'd be most grateful. ♥ ...I know LJ has like no one, but no matter, I want to find them all. XD (By "fan," I mean everyone from "last watched figure skating during the 2006 Olympics or earlier" to "breathes skating." I want to meet you aaaall. *grabby hands*)

Fill this out (excessive squee a bonus :p):

Pimp this:

~. What's your name? Kat.
!. How old are you? Eighteen.
@. Girl, boy, other? Androgyne. (Have girl body; don't want it.)
#. Where do you live? United States.
$. What's your history of being a fan? How long, what got you interested, and so forth? I didn't grow up watching TV, so the only skating I saw was once in awhile at other people's houses. But I watched the 2006 Olympics and fell hard for Johnny Weir. A year later I began skating myself, and since then I have been following skating competitions closely.
%. Which skaters do you love best? Johnny Weir, Daisuke Takahashi, and Eliot Halverson. They are the Sparkly Trifecta.
^. ...anyone you just can't stand? Evan Lysacek can bite me even if he has the prettiest legs ever and I, like, wish I had his body. *cough* Don't worry, I don't hate Evan fans or anything. I think he's a brilliant skater, but I don't like his style. ...I do find him very attractive, however. Um. *scurry*
&. Do you ship, write fic, or create art? If so, please include a link. I am the shippiest shipper wot ever shipped, but I haven't finished any fic for FS yet. Someday I will.
*. Are you a skater? If so, for how long? What made you want to start? I remember wanting to be a skater when I was like four, but I never took lessons until a year ago. I had seen the 2006 Olympics and fallen hard for Johnny Weir, but had this stupid idea that I was too old to learn to skate. Eventually I just wanted to do it badly enough that I gave in and tried it. Because I actually managed to learn things and improve, I stayed with it. :p It is now My Sport. I am one of the skating-breathers. XD
+. What's your favourite element, whether you do it yourself or just watch? Watching, I am in love with Joubert's jumps, Lambiel's spins, everything Johnny and Daisuke do, and Eliot's Biellmann. Doing, running threes and spins and mohawks.
=. If possible, link your favourite program videos. Um...just friend me. After competitions, I usually write a massive post of links. >->; I just haven't had time to cover Nationals yet.
`. What are your other fandoms? Harry Potter, Good Omens, dead poets (especially Shelley, Byron, Keats, and Severn can be an Honorary Dead Poet even though he's...not, but he TOOK CARE OF KEATS omg), and dead gay Macedonians/Greeks/Persians/Egyptians/whatevers.

Ahaha, Sparkly Trifecta?! *loves you a little*

I do find him very attractive, however
Oh I know how you feel. I think Evan is kinda hot (when he shaves!) and he's tall, which I like, but he annoys me and I don't like his skating style.

It is now My Sport. I am one of the skating-breathers. XD
Me too, me too!

And you can already do running threes? :-o *is impressed* I haven't even tried those. What kind of spins can you do?
I'm so jealous that you have the opportunity to take proper skating lessons. They finally fucking opened one basic skating class for adults here, so I signed up for the advanced group, but the things we do aren't very advanced. One day, though, I'm gonna get myself a proper "coach". Shiny! ;)

I did like Carmen. THAT Carmen. The one from last year's Nationals that I'm still pretending never happened. But that was a damn good Carmen. Unfortunately, I've never liked any of his other programs except some exhibitions--because they are fun and dance-y with not so much frowning and airpunching. XD

Running threes are EASY EASY. For real. (But I can't do them in the--I guess it's camel-position? Mine are upright.) My LFO turn is HORRIBLE, but running threes are helping it. Ask someone to show you! You just do a turn, and as you're moving backward, you put your free toepick down and pivot into another turn with the same foot you just did one on. So--lets see, it's like: RFO 3t to L counter-clockwise pivot to RFO 3t. ...if that makes any sense at all, because I am SO BAD at explaining how it feels. XD; I can only do like four before I get dizzy. Am trying to add more.

Haha, I can't spin very well. I have a short, shaky two-foot turn and an even shorter, shakier spin on my left foot. I can backspin somewhat but I often fall. I haven't worked on them much, though. I'm hoping to spend time on them tomorrow.

My winter rink doesn't have an adult class, but I'm the only one in their Gamma class, so it's like having private instruction. XD I miiight switch to real private coaching after this session, though. I am dying to learn more and more. *bounces off walls*

Yes, that was a good Carmen, I agree. Though by that time, I was so fed up with Carmen that I couldn't even properly enjoy it. I think he skated two superb programs at last year's Nationals, though.

Oh, it kinda does make sense the way you describe it. I'll have to try them on the ice. I know what they look like in the camel position, so it shouldn't be too hard to figure out how they work upright.
What I can do is a series of 3turns (and I thought you meant those) - a forward 3t, right into a backward 3t, a forward 3t again etc. They're almost like twizzles, only not as smooth and uninterrupted.

The dizziness will disappear with time, I've been told. The more you spin/do turns, the more your brain gets used to it and - in the end - your head stops spinning completely. (I once wondered how Stéphane can do his insane spins without getting dizzy and had a friend explain.) I already get much less dizzy than when I started, though I still do.

You're better than me with your spins! I've self-learned a basic spin on two feet, but they still are a little shaky sometimes. I've tried lifting one foot mid-spin and sometimes it works. I definitely do want to learn one-foot spins!

I am dying to learn more and more. *bounces off walls*
Ahaha, it is addictive, isn't it. *loves skating*

I'm pretty sure those also count as running thress, as long as they're 3ts that are moving. Not sure, though. I wish there was some sort of comprehensive boook about this. XP I can't do back 3ts yet--my instructor's just started me on inside 3ts and they are murder.

Oh yeah, I'm definitely noticing less dizziness on spins now. I used to fall just because I'd get so dizzy; now I only fall when I get off balance. XD So I think that's improvement. Sort of. How do you enter spins? I pivot into mine (left toepick down, pivot counterclockwise--like a swizzle around your foot, really--and bring my feet together to spin) and am mostly trying to gain speed because that would probably help me balance.

Ooh, ooh! A trick for spins: when you feel yourself losing balance, bend your knees a tiny bit. It helps so much, omg. I just heard of that like a month ago. Don't know whether you have or not, but it's been making my spins last a little longer.

SO ADDICTIVE. O___O Before skating, I seriously hadn't exercised for like two years because I hated sports and was bored by walking. (I've always been skinny; I was just way out of shape. I couldn't run a city block--length of about six houses--without being painfully out of breath. XP) But after I tried skating for the first time since I was seven, my mom couldn't drag me away from the rink and now I am strooong and learning cool tricks and OMG *flaps* :DDDD

...ahaha I am so bad at shutting up about skating. SOMEONE STOP ME. *flail*

Oh, you'll have the inside 3turns down in no time, the difference is not that big. They took me a little longer than outside 3ts as well, though - it was hard for me not to lose speed after the turn.

ow do you enter spins? I pivot into mine (left toepick down, pivot counterclockwise--like a swizzle around your foot, really--and bring my feet together to spin)
I do the same - some counterclockwise back crossovers, then a clockwise pivot, though without the toe-pick action - I just bring my left foot around the right, then I bring my feet together and "close" my arms to gain momentum and get spinning. So, basically, I do the same as you, more or less. :)
What I struggle with a lot is centering - how the hell do I keep my spins in one spot? I travel a lot on them and I don't quite know how to improve that. Any ideas?

Date: 2008-02-16 09:36 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] estriel.livejournal.com
Oh and don't even mention the LFO. My LFO has been such a pain, in everything. I don't know if it's due to my skates or my foot, but I keep struggling on that one - I can stand up on that edge, nice and clean and deep, but somehow, I usually chicken out.

Date: 2008-02-16 01:09 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] imagines.livejournal.com
I always chicken out, it's horrendous. XP I'm so afraid of falling. (I fell badly last summer and it took a long time for my knees to stop hurting, and I haven't convinced myself that I'm FINE now, I guess. XD; ) Do you do edge practice at all? I think I would improve my LFO if I spent time on edges, but it's hard to do it at my winter rink because there's always so many people.

Date: 2008-02-18 10:42 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] estriel.livejournal.com
Do you do edge practice at all?
I do, a bit, but probably not as much as I should.

Talking about edges - I always perv over Johnny's deep deep edges, how he's standing so far on the edge his boot is almost brushing the ice. It's hot. *giggles* Yes, I'm a little bit of a freak, getting all excited about edges

Date: 2008-02-18 02:31 pm (UTC)

*bwahaha* You are totally not a freak. His edges are hot.

~. What's your name? You can call me Amarine
!. How old are you? 17
@. Girl, boy, other? Female
#. Where do you live? Alberta, Canada
$. What's your history of being a fan? How long, what got you interested, and so forth? I'm pretty sure I must have been half-raised on the ice; I remember going to public skating at the local arena with my parents at about 5.... I took lessons for a few years and quit when I was 8; I go skating every week now and I'm planning on taking lessons again, hopefully in April, when the next set starts. I love watching skating; it's one of the few sports I actually care to watch.
%. Which skaters do you love best? I don't know any in particular.
^. ...anyone you just can't stand? N/A
&. Do you ship, write fic, or create art? If so, please include a link. Not for Figure skating, no.
*. Are you a skater? If so, for how long? What made you want to start? A few years of lessons around about 8 years, and the occasional (lately, more frequent) trip to the rink, because I love being on the ice.
+. What's your favourite element, whether you do it yourself or just watch? I'm fond of watching combination jumps, though I fail at doing anything more than a waltz, myself.
=. If possible, link your favourite program videos. I don't really follow that much; just whenever it's on TV and I'm at home.
`. What are your other fandoms? I love the Harry Potter fandom, and read a disgusting amount a fic. I don't write any, though. (Ships: HP/DM, HP/SS, HP/LM, HP/TR, primarily. I'm open to others; suffice to say I'm a slasher.) I also read some Good Omens (Aziraphale/Crowley is love! ♥) and some FMA, and cross-overs are my guilty pleasure. ;p

Y'know what would be awesome? If somebody wrote about, like, Harry Potter, Legolas, Captain Jack Sparrow, and Johnny Weir all entering a skating competition, and called the fic "Crossovers."

Hi! Since we only just became friends, I think I should fill this out. So you know who you’re dealing with . ;)

~. What's your name? Lucie, but most people call me Lucy
!. How old are you? 22
@. Girl, boy, other? I’m a girl.
#. Where do you live? Well. This is complicated. I’m originally from the Czech Republic. I currently live in Germany (have been living here since 1999). But, in about two weeks, I’m moving to Moscow, Russia, for four-five months.
$. What's your history of being a fan? How long, what got you interested, and so forth? I used to watch figure skating when I was a little girl. Back then, I mostly loved the ladies and pairs. Then we moved to Germany and Germany is definitely not the perfect place to live in terms of figure skating coverage... So I neglected my love for skating, until in 2006, shortly before the Olympics, a LJ friend of mine persuaded me to watch the men. (She lured me in with the slash! I actually thought men’s figure skating was lame.) And so I watched the men. And wow, I loved it – so much power and strength and speed... Also, about a day before the SP at the Olympics, I browsed the internet for the list of competitors, so that I wouldn’t be completely uninformed and clueless. I saw Johnny Weir’s profile on the NBC website and immediately got interested, because you know, he was this fabulous gay kid in designer sunglasses and I found him hilarious. Then I actually saw him skate and I was hooked.
%. Which skaters do you love best? Johnny Weir ♥ Nobody quite compares to him, but I also like Stéphane, Daisuke, Ryo Shibata, Tomas Verner. Oh and Aliona Savchenko/Robin Szolkowy. Plus I have a thing for little Caroline Zhang’s wicked spins.
^. ...anyone you just can't stand? Not really. Though Evan Lysacek’s arm flailing and wonky 3A annoy the hell out of me (especially if he gets completely unrealistic scores for those). I’m not a fan of Brian Joubert, either. I mean he looks like a soccer player more than a figure skater. ;) Also, the last time I watched ladies, Julia Sebestyen was kinda hideous.
&. Do you ship, write fic, or create art? If so, please include a link. Yeah baby! I ship (mainly slut Mr Weir around to about anyone) and write: all my stories are in my memories
*. Are you a skater? If so, for how long? What made you want to start? I think I first learned how to skate when I was like 4, but it was not figure skating. Then, between ages 15 and 20, I only skated very rarely. Then in fall 2006 a friend showed me some very basic figure skating elements (crossovers, three turns). I've been skating regularly (once or twice a week) since this fall. What made me want to start? Well, what made me return to the ice after all these years was my rekindled love for figure skating. And then I completely fell in love with it.
+. What's your favourite element, whether you do it yourself or just watch? My favorite element to watch is Johnny Weir's triple axel and step sequences in general. Oh and the Biellmann spin! I'm a sucker for the Biellmann! My favorite element to do, out of the few I can actually do properly, would probably be back crossovers. :)
=. If possible, link your favourite program videos. I'm gonna skip this one for now.
`. What are your other fandoms? Harry Potter (though I'm not very active anymore), Hanson, Heroes (my most recent obsession). I've dabbled into a row of other fandoms as well.

~. What's your name? Betsy
!. How old are you? 19
@. Girl, boy, other? Girl
#. Where do you live? California
$. What's your history of being a fan? How long, what got you interested, and so forth? Oh maaaan. I watched the 94 Olympics (I was like 5 or 6?) and fell in love with Alexei Urmanov. Then I fell in love with Michelle Kwan, and I basically was obsessed with girl's skating. But in 2006 I FELL HARD for Johnny Weir and have been into men's skating ever since.
%. Which skaters do you love best? Johnny Weir, Daisuke Takahashi, Eliot Halverson, Stephane Lambiel, and Jeremy Abbott. *giggles* As for the girls, I heart Yu-Na Kim.
^. ...anyone you just can't stand? Hmmmm....I don't really like Stephen Carriere's skating.
&. Do you ship, write fic, or create art? If so, please include a link. FIC!!!! Just look at my memories.
*. Are you a skater? If so, for how long? What made you want to start? *sigh* No. I want to learn, though. I just know I'm not fit enough for it at all.
+. What's your favourite element, whether you do it yourself or just watch? Running threes are pretty, and well everything Johnny does is brilliant. I also LOVE Eliot's biellmann
=. If possible, link your favourite program videos. This always varies, as I obsess with a different program every once in a while. I'm really into Johnny's Yunona i Avos SP right now, and his Unchained Melody EX.
`. What are your other fandoms? Mmmm, Digimon. And I read Gossip Girl fic every once in a while.

~. What's your name? I can never decide what I'd like people to call me. Let's go with Alex for now.
!. How old are you? 19
@. Girl, boy, other? Open to suggestions (alright, joking), leaning towards male (not joking).
#. Where do you live? The Czech Republic. Want to get out because I loathe the re-elected president. (Are they sure the results can't still be annulled?)
$. What's your history of being a fan? How long, what got you interested, and so forth? I've liked figure skating since I can remember, but I only got interested in it for real in 2005 (I think) when I truly watched my way through the world championship. Since then, I've been following it with attention.
%. Which skaters do you love best? I'm always glad to find new skaters to admire, but my constant top favourites are Daisuke Takahashi and Johnny Weir. They're artists.
^. ...anyone you just can't stand? Joubert, mostly Lysacek. All technique and no style.
&. Do you ship, write fic, or create art? If so, please include a link. I'm kind of afraid to touch figure skating in writing just yet, but I'll read it. Or look at pictures.
*. Are you a skater? If so, for how long? What made you want to start? Heh, I wish. I can stand up on skates, but whatever I can do is at the most common level and not exactly impressive.
+. What's your favourite element, whether you do it yourself or just watch? Spins! And random pretty movements through which the skater communicates emotion.
=. If possible, link your favourite program videos. Seriously? If it has my favourite skaters in it, I'll take anything. Of course, I tend to prefer videos of their high-ranking performances. *shifty eyes*
`. What are your other fandoms? Um, get ready. Harry Potter (primarily Remus/Sirius and Dumbledore/Grindelwald), House M.D. (House/Wilson), various literary fandoms, Gundam Wing, FF7, J-rock (although I'd prefer to just call it "rock"), and history. I should mention that ancient Greeks (and some Romans) can't go wrong with me. And Alexander the Great. I love that guy. XD

Hey there...you don't know me from Boo, but we're both on Lucy's flist. You say you want to meet all the skating types on LJ, so I thought I'd fill out your survey. I don't add people to my flist without meeting them in some way first, so consider this an introduction, and if you'd like, feel free to add me, and I'll reciprocate. :)

~. What's your name? Eilis

!. How old are you? old

@. Girl, boy, other? girl

#. Where do you live? sunny southern California

$. What's your history of being a fan? How long, what got you interested, and so forth? I've loved skating since my parents took me to see Dorothy Hamill when I was four. I consider myself more skater than fan now, however.

%. Which skaters do you love best? Johnny Weir, Stephane Lambiel, Nam/Leftheris...and older: Todd Eldredge, Surya Bonaly (just for her attitude..wow!), Ina/Zimmerman. And Michelle Kwan, of course. There are other skaters I like who no one has heard of, and I like other retired skaters because they rock as coaches.

^. ...anyone you just can't stand? Evan Lysacek, Sasha Cohen, Michael Weiss, Nancy Kerrigan, Smirnov/Kawaguchi, Katy Taylor.

&. Do you ship, write fic, or create art? If so, please include a link. no

*. Are you a skater? If so, for how long? What made you want to start? I'm a skater. I started in January 2006, but I broke my arm and then had a really nasty knee injury that required surgery, so I was off the ice for much of the year. I have been working with a coach twice a week for a year, and I've made a lot of progress of which I am quite proud. I started skating because a rink opened near my house and offered adult classes. I didn't know adults could take lessons, but I signed right up.

+. What's your favourite element, whether you do it yourself or just watch? To do: waltz jump (I'm clockwise), COE spiral, BOE spiral, tooling around doing whatever. To watch: Johnny Weir's 3A, Caroline Zhang's spiral sequence, really well done pirouettes and twizzles, Stephane Lambiel's spins.

=. If possible, link your favourite program videos.
